Ramps for cars and boots

The boot is where most owners feel the problem first, usually while lifting a wet dog. A folding car ramp packs down to live behind the seats, while a telescopic adjustable dog ramp extends far enough to keep a high tailgate manageable. Measure the load lip before you choose.

Steps for sofas and beds

Indoors the constraint is floor space rather than slope. A set of foldable dog steps tucks in beside an armchair and folds away for visitors, and a dog ramp with a pouffe splits bed height into two easy stages while passing as furniture.

Grip, gradient and weight limit

Three things decide whether a dog will use it: a textured surface that claws can hold, a slope shallow enough to walk rather than scramble, and feet that do not slide. Check the stated weight limit against your dog before ordering, whether you choose a 2-in-1 steps and ramp or a full-length adjustable ramp.

Steps for the bathroom

Getting a heavy dog in and out of a bath is one of the commonest ways owners hurt their own backs. A set of bathroom steps lets the dog walk in on its own, which is calmer for both of you, provided the feet grip on wet tile.

Kinder on hips and backs

Every avoided jump is one less jolt through the joints, which is why ramps are so often recommended for dachshunds, older dogs and dogs recovering from surgery. Pair one with proper support at the other end of the day: a well-padded bed from our dog beds and mattresses, and a secured travel spot from dog car seats and travel.

Dog steps and ramps: your questions answered

Is a ramp or steps better for an older dog?

A ramp, in almost every case. Steps still involve a small jump and landing at each tread, which loads the front legs and the lower back, while a ramp lets a dog walk up with all four feet down and no impact. For arthritis, hip trouble, a long back or recovery from surgery, an adjustable dog ramp is the safer buy, and a 2-in-1 steps and ramp covers both if you are unsure.

How steep should a dog ramp be?

Gentler than most people expect. The gradient matters far more than the height reached, so a longer ramp against the same tailgate is always easier to walk than a short one, and a dog in pain needs a shallower slope than a fit dog. A telescopic adjustable ramp lets you set the angle for the car and shorten it for the sofa, and a ramp with a pouffe splits bed height into two easy stages.

How do I measure for a car ramp?

Park on level ground and measure from the ground to the load lip of the boot. That single figure is what decides the slope, and it is why a ramp that suits an estate can be far too steep on a high SUV. Compare it with the working height on the product page, check the width suits your dog, and check the folded size against your boot floor so a folding car ramp can live in the car.

My dog refuses to use the ramp. What do I do?

Start flat. Lay the ramp on the floor with no slope, reward your dog for standing on it, then for walking its length, and only then raise one end a few centimetres at a time over several short sessions. Use treats and a hand at the collar, never lift a frightened dog on, and check the surface first, because most refusals are about grip rather than nerve. Practising indoors with a bedside ramp before you try an adjustable ramp at the car makes the whole thing easier.

Do small breeds really need steps indoors?

They benefit from them, yes. A small or long-backed dog jumping off a sofa or bed lands from several times its own shoulder height, and repeating that daily for years is hard on the joints and the spine. A set of foldable dog steps solves the sofa, and bathroom steps make bath time easier on your back as well as your dog's.
