Cat Beds & Lounges

Cats sleep up to sixteen hours a day and they are fussy about where. Here you will find enclosed cat caves and dens for the ones who want to disappear, window beds for the sunbathers, donut beds, and raised lounges, in sizes from a kitten to a large adult.

Covered or open bed?

Watch where your cat already sleeps. A cat who squeezes into boxes and wardrobes wants an enclosed option such as the enclosed den bed or a soft cave bed, where the roof blocks sightlines and she can nap without watching the room. A cat who sleeps stretched out in the middle of the floor will ignore a cave and use a donut bed instead.

Beds by the window

A window is a cat's television, and a window bed turns a cold sill into a warm perch with a view. Fix it to glass that gets sun for part of the day rather than the brightest window in the house, since most cats move away from direct midday heat. If the sill is already crowded, height works just as well and our cat trees give the same vantage point.

Homes with several cats

Count sleeping spots rather than cats, and aim for at least one more spot than you have animals. Two cats forced to share will guard the best place instead of resting, so a double cat bed lounge with two separate levels works better than one large bed. Give the shy one a covered option such as the wooden cat den so she can opt out without leaving the room.

Kittens and older cats

A kitten wants warmth and walls, so something small and soft beats a big empty bed. Older cats want the opposite of a climb: a low entry, a firm base that does not swallow stiff joints, and somewhere warm out of the draught. A raised round bed keeps an older cat off a cold floor without a jump, and a fleece blanket added on top is often all it takes to win her over.

Winning over a fussy cat

Cats choose by smell and safety, not by price. Put the new bed exactly where she already sleeps rather than where you would like her to sleep, and put a worn t-shirt or her existing blanket inside so it smells familiar from the first night. Never wash everything at once. A little catnip helps, and if she still refuses, move the bed rather than replacing it. A sofa bed placed beside your own seat usually wins, as does the donut den in a quiet corner.

Caves, dens and hideaways

Cats feel safest when their back is covered. The enclosed den bed and the soft cave bed both cut sightlines so a nervous or newly moved cat can sleep properly, and a wooden option such as the Lunatto cat den doubles as furniture rather than looking like pet equipment.

Window beds and high perches

A window bed gives a cat sun, a view and height in one, which is the combination indoor cats miss most. Choose a window that gets sun for part of the day rather than all of it, and check the suction cups on clean glass every few weeks.

Beds for more than one cat

Two cats need at least three resting places or they compete for the best one. A double cat bed lounge separates them by level, which settles most tension, and adding height through our cat trees and scratching posts gives them routes that do not cross.

Warmth, washing and care

Cats seek warmth, so position matters more than filling. Keep beds off draughty floors, add a washable fleece blanket that can be swapped without washing the whole bed, and never wash every soft thing at once or you remove her scent from the room at a stroke.

Warm weather options

In summer a thick bed goes unused. Leave a cool hard surface available and add a cooling mat beside the usual bed so she can choose, rather than taking her bed away. More in our cooling and summer collection.

Cat beds and lounges: your questions answered

Why does my cat ignore the bed I bought?

Usually placement and smell rather than the bed itself. Put it exactly where she already sleeps, add a worn t-shirt or her old blanket so it smells right, and give it a fortnight before moving it. A covered cave bed often wins over a cat who has been refusing open beds.

Do cats prefer covered beds?

Many do, especially nervous cats and those in busy homes, because a roof removes the need to watch the room. The enclosed den bed suits that cat. Confident cats who sleep stretched out in the open will use a flat or donut bed instead, so watch her habits first.

How many beds do two cats need?

At least three separate resting places, so neither has to negotiate for the best one. A double cat bed lounge gives two levels in one footprint, and adding a perch or two from our cat trees spreads them out further.

Are window beds safe?

Yes on clean glass, within the stated weight limit, and checked every few weeks as suction can weaken with temperature changes. Fit a window bed low enough that a fall would be short, and skip it for a very heavy cat or a window you open often.

What bed suits an older cat?

One with a low entry, a firm base and a warm draught-free spot. Stiff joints struggle with deep sides and with sinking into soft filling. A raised round bed keeps her off a cold floor without asking her to jump, and a heated room corner beats any special feature.
