How many trays?
The rule that solves most problems is one tray per cat plus one spare, placed in different rooms rather than side by side. Two trays next to each other count as one to a cat. Size matters just as much: the tray should be about one and a half times your cat's body length, which is why a large covered box suits big breeds better than a standard tray, while a portable tray is for travel rather than daily use.
Covered or open?
Cats generally prefer open trays because they can see what is coming, but owners prefer covers because they contain the mess. A covered tray works well for confident cats and for scatterers, provided you clean it more often, since a hood traps smell inside where the cat has to sit in it. If your cat suddenly starts going elsewhere after you fit a lid, take the lid off first before assuming anything medical.
Self-cleaning trays

Scoop daily, change the litter completely every week or two, and wash the tray with unscented soap, because perfumed cleaners put cats off. A stainless steel tray does not absorb odour the way scratched plastic does, and an air purifier made for the litter box handles what is left. Keep a scoop with its own holder beside the tray so the job takes seconds.
Hiding it in the room
A tray in the middle of the bathroom floor is why many people end up with a cat who avoids it, since cats want somewhere quiet with an escape route and no washing machine starting up next to them. A litter cabinet with side entry reads as furniture and contains the scatter, and a litter box house does the same in a smaller footprint. Put a large litter mat at the exit to catch what the paws carry out.
