Collars, Leads & Harnesses

The right harness turns a walk from a tug of war into a walk. Here you will find no-pull harnesses, padded everyday harnesses, reflective and LED collars for dark mornings, leads from short city handles to long training lines, and collars with an AirTag pocket.

Harness or collar?

For walking, a harness is the safer default. Pressure sits across the chest instead of the throat, which matters for any dog that pulls and especially for flat-faced breeds and small dogs with delicate windpipes. Use a padded adjustable harness for everyday walks and keep a collar on him as well, since that is what carries his ID tag.

Stopping a dog pulling

A front clip changes the mechanics: when your dog pulls, he turns gently towards you instead of powering forward, which is what a no-pull harness is designed to do. It buys you the room to reward walking beside you, but it is not training on its own. Stop moving the moment the lead goes tight and start again when it loosens, and use a fixed-length lead rather than a retractable one while you teach it.

Getting the fit right

Two fingers should slide flat under any strap, no more. A harness that is too loose lets a frightened dog reverse straight out of it, which is the most common way dogs are lost on walks. Measure the chest at the widest point behind the front legs and the neck where the collar sits, and check the fit again after a coat change or weight gain. Both the Detixy harness and the floral harness adjust at several points for exactly this reason.

Walking in the dark

From autumn onwards most walks happen in the dark, and reflective stitching only works once a car's headlights are already on you. Something that emits its own light is better: a light-up lead or a LED collar makes your dog visible from a distance and, just as usefully, lets you see him off the path. For a dog who bolts, a glowing AirTag collar adds a way to find him, and our training and safety range covers GPS trackers.

Leads for every situation

Match the lead to the job rather than owning one for everything. A short lead keeps a dog close on a pavement, a retractable lead gives freedom in open space but no control in traffic, and a hands-free lead with a waist bag suits running and carrying treats. Walking two dogs? A double lead stops the tangle that turns two dogs into one knot.

Harnesses for dogs that pull

A front attachment point turns a pulling dog gently back towards you rather than letting him lean into the lead. A no-pull harness makes training possible; it does not replace it. Pair it with a fixed-length lead while you teach loose-lead walking.

Everyday comfort and fit

Padding matters most where the straps cross the chest and behind the front legs, which is where rubbing starts. The adjustable padded harness and the Detixy harness both adjust at several points so the fit survives a coat change.

Collars, ID and trackers

Even a harnessed dog should wear a collar, because that is what carries identification. An adjustable reflective collar covers the everyday case, and a glowing AirTag collar adds both visibility and a way to locate a dog who slips away.

Being seen after dark

Reflective material needs headlights to work. Active light does not, which is why a light-up lead or a LED collar is worth having from October onwards. It also lets you keep track of a dark-coated dog off the path.

Choosing the right lead

Short for pavements and traffic, long for open space, hands-free for running. A lead with a waist bag keeps treats to hand, and a double lead keeps two dogs from tangling around each other and your legs.

Harnesses, collars and leads: your questions answered

Is a harness better than a collar for walking?

For walking, yes. A harness spreads pressure across the chest rather than the throat, which matters for pullers, small breeds and flat-faced dogs. Use a padded adjustable harness for the walk and keep a collar on him too, since the collar carries his ID tag.

Do no-pull harnesses actually work?

They reduce pulling immediately because the front clip turns your dog towards you instead of letting him lean forward, but they do not teach him anything by themselves. Use a no-pull harness alongside stopping every time the lead tightens, and the habit sticks.

How tight should a dog harness be?

Two fingers should slide flat under every strap, no more. Looser than that and a startled dog can reverse out of it, which is how most dogs are lost on a walk. Measure the chest behind the front legs, and choose a multi-point design such as the Detixy harness so you can re-adjust as his coat changes.

How do I keep my dog visible at night?

Use active light rather than reflective material alone, because reflectors only return light that is already pointed at them. A LED collar or a light-up lead makes a dark dog visible to drivers and to you.

Are retractable leads safe?

In open space they are useful; beside traffic they are not, because you cannot stop a dog quickly on a long thin line. Keep a retractable lead locked short near roads, always attach it to a harness rather than a collar, and switch to a fixed-length lead in town.
