A dog sleeps for a good half of the day, so the bed is the piece of furniture he uses most. Here you will find orthopaedic mattresses, raised and ventilated frames, deep donut beds and washable covers, in sizes from a curled-up puppy to a stretched-out giant breed.
Getting the size right
Measure your dog lying on his side, nose to tail, and add roughly 20 cm. Dogs that sprawl need a flat rectangular surface such as an orthopaedic dog mattress, while dogs that curl into a ball feel safer with a raised rim like the donut bed or an oval dog bed. A bed that is slightly too big is always better than one he hangs over.
Beds for older dogs
Stiff hips and elbows need support underneath rather than softness on top. A firm foam base spreads the weight instead of letting the joints sink to the floor, which is what an orthopaedic bed with a bolster is built for. Keep the entry low so an older dog does not have to climb, and if he already struggles to get onto the sofa, a ramp or a set of steps solves the other half of the problem.
Raised and cooling beds
A ventilated elevated bed lifts your dog off a cold floor and lets air move underneath, which suits thick-coated breeds and warm rooms. Keeping it clean
Buy for the wash, not just the look. A removable, zipped cover is the difference between a bed that lasts years and one you throw out in spring, and a bed with a pull-out mattress lets you wash the core separately. Vacuum before washing so hair does not felt into the fabric, and keep a spare fleece blanket on top to catch most of the dirt.
Where to put it
Dogs settle fastest with their back to a wall and a view of the door, out of the main walking route but still in the room where the family sits. A dog left alone in a back room usually moves himself to the hallway. If yours guards the sofa, put the bed beside it rather than in another room, and give a nervous dog a second soft spot such as a sofa bed or a teepee bed to retreat to.
