Litter Boxes & Accessories

The litter tray is the one thing in the house a cat will not compromise on, and most indoor accidents trace back to it. Here you will find open and covered trays, self-cleaning boxes, furniture cabinets that hide the tray completely, plus mats, scoops and filters.

How many trays?

The rule that solves most problems is one tray per cat plus one spare, placed in different rooms rather than side by side. Two trays next to each other count as one to a cat. Size matters just as much: the tray should be about one and a half times your cat's body length, which is why a large covered box suits big breeds better than a standard tray, while a portable tray is for travel rather than daily use.

Covered or open?

Cats generally prefer open trays because they can see what is coming, but owners prefer covers because they contain the mess. A covered tray works well for confident cats and for scatterers, provided you clean it more often, since a hood traps smell inside where the cat has to sit in it. If your cat suddenly starts going elsewhere after you fit a lid, take the lid off first before assuming anything medical.

Self-cleaning trays

An automatic tray such as the Neakasa M1 or the Litterluxe Pro rakes waste into a sealed drawer minutes after your cat leaves, which keeps smell down and means you empty a drawer rather than scoop daily. They suit adult cats who are already reliable. Introduce one with the motor switched off for the first week, and keep refill waste bags in stock so it is never out of action.

Keeping the smell down

Smell is a cleaning frequency problem before it is a product problem. Scoop daily, change the litter completely every week or two, and wash the tray with unscented soap, because perfumed cleaners put cats off. A stainless steel tray does not absorb odour the way scratched plastic does, and an air purifier made for the litter box handles what is left. Keep a scoop with its own holder beside the tray so the job takes seconds.

Hiding it in the room

A tray in the middle of the bathroom floor is why many people end up with a cat who avoids it, since cats want somewhere quiet with an escape route and no washing machine starting up next to them. A litter cabinet with side entry reads as furniture and contains the scatter, and a litter box house does the same in a smaller footprint. Put a large litter mat at the exit to catch what the paws carry out.

Cat litter trays and boxes: your questions answered

Still have a question?

How many litter trays do I need?

One per cat plus one spare, placed in different rooms. Two trays side by side count as a single tray to a cat. Size it at roughly one and a half times her body length, so a big breed needs a large covered box rather than a standard tray.

Do cats prefer covered litter trays?

Most cats prefer open trays because they can see around them, but a cover contains scatter and suits confident cats. A covered tray needs cleaning more often, because a hood keeps the smell inside where your cat has to sit in it.

Are self-cleaning litter boxes worth it?

For a reliable adult cat, yes. Waste is sealed away within minutes rather than sitting until the evening, which is what actually controls smell. The Neakasa M1 is a good starting point. Run it with the motor off for the first week so the noise does not put her off.

How do I stop the litter tray smelling?

Scoop daily, replace the litter fully every week or two, and wash with unscented soap. Perfumed cleaners mask nothing and put cats off the tray. A stainless steel tray avoids the scratched plastic that traps odour, and an litter box air purifier handles the rest.

Why has my cat stopped using the litter tray?

Check the simple things first: a new lid, a moved tray, a different litter, or a tray that is not clean enough. Cats also avoid trays beside noisy appliances. Try an open tray in a quiet spot with a litter mat underneath. If nothing changes within a few days, or you see straining or blood, speak to your vet, since sudden avoidance can signal a urinary problem.
