For Cats

Everything for a cat that lives mostly indoors: climbing, scratching, litter, water, beds, grooming and hunting games. Start with cat trees and scratching posts, or see the newest additions in new arrivals.

A New Cat's First Week

A newly adopted cat needs one quiet room, not the run of the house. Put a litter tray in it, food and water at the opposite end, a place to hide and something to climb, then let the cat come to you. A covered den such as the Lunatto Cat Den lets a nervous cat watch the room without being exposed, and a low tower from cat trees and scratching posts gives height without a long jump. Toys, a fountain and a second tray can all wait a fortnight. If the cat will eventually go outside, fit a microchip cat flap before that first trip rather than after it.

Climbing and Scratching

Cats settle better when they can get above eye level, and they will scratch whether or not you provide a surface for it. Give them both. A tall or floor-to-ceiling cat tree belongs in the room the family actually uses, not the spare bedroom, and where floor space is tight a wall-mounted scratching board does the same job on the vertical. Offer one upright and one flat surface, and put the new post beside the spot already being scratched rather than in another room. The full range sits in cat trees and scratching posts, with soft landing places in cat beds and lounges.

Litter and Hygiene

The rule of thumb is one tray per cat plus one, kept away from the food and out of any corridor the dog uses. Open trays suit most cats; a hood contains scatter and smell but still needs scooping just as often. Browse litter boxes and accessories for covered, cabinet and stainless steel options, or let a self-cleaning tray take over the daily scoop. If the smell reaches the living room, the AirClean litter box air purifier works at the tray itself, and room units sit in air purifiers for pets. A sudden change in toilet habits is a vet question, not a litter question.

Water, Food and Play

Cats evolved to take most of their water from prey, which is why many drink too little on a dry diet. Moving water helps: the Fontanello cordless fountain or another option from bowls, feeders and water usually lifts intake within days. Keep the bowl away from the tray, use a shallow dish so the whiskers clear the sides, and split the daily ration across a puzzle feeder instead of one full bowl. Short hunts beat long ones, so two five-minute games with something from toys and enrichment do more than one long session, and a cat exercise wheel suits the cats that sprint at midnight.

Grooming, Travel and Care

Long-haired cats need combing every few days or the mats end up being cut out at the vet; short-haired cats mostly need help through the spring moult. Combs, clippers, dryers, ear and eye cleaners and dental kit are all in grooming and care, and a paw trimmer deals with the fur between the pads that makes wooden floors slippery. For the vet run, pick something sturdy from carriers and backpacks and leave it open at home as a bed, so it stops being an ambush. Everyday supplements and skin care sit in pet pharmacy.

How many trays, and where

Placement decides whether a tray gets used. Cats avoid dead ends, noisy appliances and anywhere they can be cornered, so a laundry room next to a spinning machine is a common reason for accidents on the rug. Spread the trays across different rooms rather than lining them up side by side, and choose the shape that fits the spot from litter boxes and accessories.

Signs an indoor cat is bored

Night-time zoomies, ankle attacks, over-grooming and shouting at four in the morning usually mean unspent hunting energy rather than bad manners. The fix is structured play at the same times each day, ending with food, plus something that moves on its own between sessions. Rotate a few things from toys and enrichment so nothing stays interesting for too long, and keep the rest out of sight.

Two cats in one home

Cats share space by taking turns, not by sitting together, so count resting places rather than cats. Two cats want at least three separate perches or hideaways, ideally at different heights, plus two feeding stations far enough apart that neither has to queue. A second tower from cat trees and scratching posts in another room settles more disputes than any amount of intervention, and an extra bed from cat beds and lounges gives the shyer one somewhere of its own.

Keeping claws off the sofa

Trimming the tips every few weeks reduces the damage but never removes the urge, because scratching is stretching and scent marking as much as claw care. Cover the damaged corner, put a better surface directly beside it, and reward the first time it is used. Nail tools and combs are in grooming and care, and cats that find handling stressful often do better with a calming routine and something from calming and anxiety relief.

Where to look next

To scan the whole cat range as one long list rather than by theme, use all cat products. Reduced lines are collected in sale, engraved tags and bowls in personalised pet accessories, and homes with a dog as well can continue in for dogs.

Cat accessories: your questions answered

What does a newly adopted cat need first?

One quiet room with a litter tray, food and water at the far end, a hiding place and something to climb. Everything else can wait until the cat is exploring on its own terms. A covered bed such as the Lunatto cat den gives it somewhere to watch from, and a low tower from cat trees and scratching posts is easier for an unsettled cat than a tall one. Expect two weeks before the personality shows.

How many litter trays should I have?

One per cat plus one, placed in different rooms rather than side by side, away from the food bowls and out of any thoroughfare. Two trays next to each other count as one to a cat. Choose the format that fits the room from litter boxes and accessories, and if the daily scoop is the part that slips, a self-cleaning tray removes the excuse.

Why will my cat not drink from its bowl?

Usually the location and the shape rather than the water. Cats dislike drinking beside their food, and a deep narrow bowl presses on the whiskers, so many prefer a dripping tap to a full dish. Move the water to another room, use a wide shallow dish, and try moving water such as the Fontanello stainless steel fountain or another option from bowls, feeders and water. A cat that suddenly starts drinking far more should see a vet.

How do I stop my cat scratching the sofa?

Give a better surface in the same place instead of trying to stop the behaviour, because scratching is stretching and scent marking as well as claw care. Put a sturdy post right beside the damaged corner, not in the hallway, and leave it there for at least a fortnight. Where there is no floor space, a wall-mounted scratching board works at the same height the cat already uses, and there are upright and flat options across cat trees and scratching posts, since most cats want both.

How do I make the trip to the vet less stressful?

Stop hiding the carrier. Leave it out all year with a blanket inside so it becomes a bed rather than a warning, feed the odd meal in it, and only then start closing the door for a minute at a time. A stable model from carriers and backpacks that opens from the top makes lifting a tense cat far easier than dragging it out of a front hatch. Cover the carrier with a towel in the waiting room, and ask about calming support from calming and anxiety relief if the journey is long.
