For Dogs

Everything for life with a dog, in one place: beds, leads, travel gear, bowls, grooming kit and toys for the days when the walk has to be short. Start with dog beds and mattresses, or see what has just landed in new arrivals.

New Puppy Essentials

A puppy needs far less in week one than most checklists suggest: a washable bed, a safe pen or crate to settle in, a flat collar and lead, two bowls and something legal to chew. A puppy playpen with a door saves more furniture than any spray, and a lightweight adjustable collar from collars, leads and harnesses is enough until the chest stops growing. Buying a full-size harness at eight weeks usually means buying twice. Long lines, boundary kit and recall aids from training and safety can wait until the vaccinations are done.

Beds and Resting

Dogs sleep for most of the day, so the bed gets more use than anything else you buy. Measure your dog lying flat and add roughly 20 cm, then choose by sleeping style: sprawlers want a flat mattress, curlers want a raised bolster, and stiff older dogs do better on firm foam such as the Orthopaedic Dog Mattress. If your dog prefers a den, a crate that doubles as a side table hides the setup in a living room, and dogs that struggle to settle alone often do better with help from calming and anxiety relief.

Walks and Training

A harness that fits keeps pressure off the throat and gives you more control than a collar on its own. Measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs, then choose from collars, leads and harnesses, or go straight to a no-pull harness if your dog tows you down the pavement. Reflective webbing matters more than most owners expect between October and March. For barking, recall work, agility and trackers, see training and safety.

Travel and Days Out

A loose dog in a car is a hazard to everyone in it. Secure the back seat or boot with a restraint from dog car seats and travel and keep the upholstery intact with a full rear seat cover. Older dogs, short legs and recovering joints all travel better on wheels, which is where bike trailers and pet strollers earn their keep, and a foldable ramp for the car spares a big dog the jump into the boot. For trains, cabins and cafes, look at carriers and backpacks.

Feeding, Grooming and Play

A raised or slow bowl from bowls, feeders and water stretches out a meal for a gulper and takes strain off a tall dog's neck, while a fountain often gets a reluctant drinker going. Coat care is mostly prevention: brush a few times a week, keep the nails short and dry the ears after wet walks, using the clippers, dryers and dental kit in grooming and care, or a nail grinder if your dog dislikes clippers. On short-walk days a puzzle from toys and enrichment or the automatic ball launcher does more than another lap of the block, and cold-weather coats live in pet clothing.

Getting the fit right

Sizing goes wrong more often than anything else in a dog order. Measure the chest just behind the front legs for a harness, and the neck with two fingers under the tape for a collar, then check those numbers against the size table on the product page rather than going by breed. Sizes are not interchangeable between makers, so compare each time you browse collars, leads and harnesses. If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger one and tighten the straps.

Beds for older joints

A dog that circles for a long time before lying down, or drops heavily instead of settling, is usually telling you the bed is too thin. Firm foam that does not bottom out under the elbows is the fix, and a low side is easier to step over. Look through dog beds and mattresses, then take the jumping out of the day as well with dog steps and ramps at the sofa and the boot.

Winter mornings and summer afternoons

Thin-coated and short-haired dogs lose heat quickly on dark walks, so a fitted coat from pet clothing and apparel is practical rather than decorative. In midsummer the risk reverses: walk early, test the pavement with the back of your hand, and use a mat or vest from cooling and summer on the hottest days.

Living with hair and dander

Shedding is manageable if you catch it before it reaches the sofa. Brushing outdoors twice a week and drying the coat properly after wet walks removes most of it, and the brushes, dryers and clippers for both jobs sit in grooming and care. In flats where dander lingers, a unit from air purifiers for pet homes makes a difference to the smell as well as the dust.

Where to look next

If you are stocking up rather than solving one problem, the whole range is easier to scan in all dog products. Reduced lines are gathered in sale, and households with a cat as well can carry straight on into for cats.

Dog accessories: your questions answered

What does a puppy actually need in the first week?

A washable bed, a safe space, a flat collar and lead, two bowls and a suitable chew. That is genuinely it for week one. A puppy playpen with a door gives the puppy somewhere to be when you cannot watch, and a small adjustable collar from collars, leads and harnesses covers the first months. Harnesses, coats and long lines are better bought once you can see the adult size.

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs, with the tape snug but not tight, then measure the neck with two fingers underneath. Compare both figures with the size chart on the product page rather than the breed name, because sizing differs between models in collars, leads and harnesses. A dog that pulls hard is usually better served by a no-pull harness with a front attachment point than by a tighter collar.

Which bed suits an older or stiff dog?

Firm foam with a low entry side. Soft filling feels generous in the shop but collapses under the elbows and hips, which is exactly where an older dog needs support, so something like the orthopaedic dog mattress holds up better over a year. Compare thicknesses across dog beds and mattresses, and remove the jump onto the sofa or into the boot with steps or a ramp.

How should my dog travel in the car?

Restrained, every single trip. An unsecured dog can be thrown forward in a sudden stop and will often bolt from an opened door after a shunt. Pick a booster, belt or boot setup from dog car seats and travel to suit the size of the dog, and protect the seats with a scratch-proof rear seat cover. Build up from short trips, and keep the first few journeys short enough to end well.

What can I do on days when a long walk is impossible?

Swap distance for thinking. Ten minutes of nose work, chewing or problem solving settles most dogs more than an extra lap of the block, and it works indoors in bad weather. Scatter part of the daily food into a puzzle or mat from toys and enrichment, or run short fetch sessions in the garden with an automatic ball launcher. Finish before the dog gets frantic rather than after.
