The right toy does more than fill a basket. It gives a dog something legal to chew, gives a cat a reason to hunt indoors, and turns a wet afternoon into a proper mental workout. Here you will find chew toys, fetch toys, wand and laser toys, snuffle mats, lick mats and food puzzles for dogs and cats of every size.

Chewer or chaser?

Watch how your pet actually plays before you buy. A dog that lies down and works at something with its back teeth is a chewer, and it needs solid rubber or nylon that will not shred, such as the ChewUp chew toy or a textured dental chew toy that cleans while it works. A dog that lives to run needs distance rather than resistance, so an automatic ball launcher or a self-propelled rolling ball will do far more good. Tuggers want something they can grip with a person on the other end, and a set like the tug toys 10-pack means you can retire one the moment it splits.

Rotate, do not buy more

Most homes have too many toys out at once, which is exactly why the dog ignores all of them. Keep three or four within reach, box the rest, and swap them on the same day each week. A toy that has been out of sight for seven days is interesting again, so a PetZynergy activity ball or a SmartPaw earns a second first impression instead of becoming part of the furniture. Rotate by season too: the DoggyDip pool and the Pawsplash sprinkler mat can live in the shed all winter and come back out on the first warm week.

Food puzzles tire dogs

Sniffing, licking and problem-solving use a dog's brain in a way that another lap of the same park never will, and ten minutes of it before you leave the house often buys you a much quieter morning. Tip the daily ration into a carrot snuffle mat or a PetSniff activity mat instead of a bowl, spread something soft across a lick mat while you get ready, or make dinner last twenty minutes with a leaky feeder. Start easy so the first attempt ends in success, then make it harder over a fortnight.

Keeping indoor cats busy

Cats hunt in short bursts, several times a day, and a toy that only moves while you are holding it cannot cover all of that. Run one session yourself with a wand such as the Felineo hanging cat toy or the wriggling fish, then leave something that moves on its own for the hours you are out, like the Purrnivo automatic string toy or the Felineo Spinball 2.0. Add somewhere to stalk from with a foldable cat tunnel, a thinking task like the Purrnivo cat puzzle with claw file, and height from our cat trees and scratching posts. Always end a laser session with a real toy the cat can catch.

Safe play and supervision

Check every toy once a week and bin anything with a split seam, a loose squeaker or a chewed-off end, because the loose pieces are the danger rather than the toy itself. Size up for a strong jaw instead of buying the same small toy twice, put wand and string toys away between sessions, and stay in the room the first few times your pet meets something new such as the Purrnivo interactive hunting mat. No toy replaces supervision, and if the chewing is really about frustration or boredom you will get further with a bit more structure to the day and our training and safety range than with one more toy.

Dog and cat toys: your questions answered

Still have a question?

How many toys should I have out at once?

Three or four is plenty for most homes. Box the rest and swap them on the same day each week, because a toy that has been out of sight for seven days is interesting again: a familiar SmartPaw or PetZynergy activity ball earns a second first impression instead of becoming part of the furniture. Rotation costs nothing and works better than buying more.

Does a snuffle mat really tire a dog out?

For most dogs, yes. Sniffing out food is slow, focused work, and ten minutes of it usually settles a dog more than a brisk twenty-minute walk. Tip the normal dinner into a carrot snuffle mat or a PetSniff activity mat, leave the food easy to find on day one, and only make it harder once your dog finishes without giving up.

Which toys last with a dog that destroys everything?

Look for one-piece construction in solid rubber or nylon rather than stitched plush with a squeaker inside. The ChewUp chew toy and the dental chew toy are where we would start for a heavy chewer, sized up rather than down. Check them weekly and bin any toy with a chunk missing, since swallowed pieces are the real risk.

How do I get an indoor cat to play?

Move the toy like prey, not like a person. Drag the wriggling fish away from your cat in short darting bursts, let her catch it every few passes, and stop after three or four minutes rather than waiting for her to lose interest. For the hours you are out, something self-powered such as the Purrnivo automatic string toy keeps the habit alive.

How often should I replace my pet's toys?

Inspect weekly and replace on damage rather than on a schedule. Split seams, loose squeakers and chewed-off ends are the point at which a toy stops being a toy, so a multipack such as the tug toys 10-pack is easier to retire from than a single favourite. Wand toys like the Felineo hanging cat toy should be put away between sessions so the string stays out of reach.
