Carriers & Backpacks

A carrier is the one piece of travel kit your cat or small dog will actually be shut inside, so it is worth getting right. Here you will find soft cabin bags for flying, backpacks and slings for walking, wheeled cases for airports and long platforms, and carriers that double as a bike basket, sized for cats, kittens and small breeds. If your dog has grown past carrying weight, start with our pet strollers instead.

Flying with your cat

Airlines do let small pets travel in the cabin, but almost all of them require a soft-sided bag that fits under the seat in front of you, and each airline publishes its own maximum dimensions plus a combined weight for pet and bag, often around 8 kg. A soft bag such as our flight-approved carrier bag matters because the sides give a little at the check-in gauge and under a tight seat, where a rigid box simply will not go. Read the rules on the airline's own site for the month you fly rather than a forum post, book your pet on at the same time as your seat, since cabin places are capped per flight, and have the health documents ready. Driving instead? The kit is different, and you will find it in dog car seats and travel.

Getting the size right

Measure before you buy, because a carrier that looks generous in a photo is often only generous for a kitten. Take the length from the nose to the base of the tail, and the height from the floor to the top of the shoulder while your cat is standing, then add about five centimetres to each. She should be able to stand without ducking her head, turn round, and lie flat. The number people get wrong is the weight limit: it describes what the base board and the seams will hold, not how much room there is inside, so a bag rated to 10 kg can still be far too short for a long, lean cat. If she falls between sizes, an expandable backpack unzips into extra floor space once you are sitting on the train, while a compact backpack carrier for cats and small dogs is easier to keep on your back for an hour.

Backpacks, slings or wheels

How far you are carrying decides the shape. For a short walk to the clinic, a sling bag holds a small pet against your body and leaves both hands free. For a full day out, weight on two shoulders is far kinder to your back than a single strap, and a double backpack spreads it across the chest as well. Once an airport, a station or a long pavement is involved, wheels win: a carrier that converts between backpack and trolley rolls through the terminal and goes on your back at the stairs. And if you are supporting an older or recovering dog rather than transporting one, a support sling harness is the right tool for that job.

Before the vet visit

The morning of the appointment is far too late. Bring the carrier out weeks ahead, take the door off or leave it wide open, and let it sit in the room your cat already likes with a familiar blanket inside. Feed her in it. Drop treats through the mesh when she walks past. The aim is that the carrier stops predicting a needle and starts predicting food, which usually takes two or three weeks of doing nothing dramatic at all. A soft carry bag that stays out as a bed all year does most of this on its own, and a top-opening design such as the PetPacker backpack lets you lower a reluctant cat in rather than push her through an end door. On the day, drape a towel over the bag, keep it level, and carry it against your body instead of swinging it.

Carriers that convert

Several of these do more than one job, which is the point of buying them. The Pawresa 2-in-1 carrier is a wheeled trolley case and a backpack in the same shell, so it rolls through a terminal and goes on your shoulders at the stairs. The Pendlo bike basket and carrier bag lifts off the handlebars and becomes a shoulder bag when you arrive, and a bike basket with a built-in safety harness stops a curious cat leaning out at a junction. If the journey starts by car, a raised seat from dog car seats and travel keeps a small dog contained on the back bench. And for dogs well beyond carrying weight, the same convert-as-you-go thinking runs through our bike trailers, several of which turn into a pram in seconds.

Cabin bags and airline rules

Every airline publishes its own under-seat dimensions and its own combined weight for pet and bag, so check the airline you are flying with before you buy rather than after. A soft-sided bag such as the flight-approved carrier bag flexes into a tight space where a hard box will not, and cabin places are limited per flight, so add your pet to the booking when you book your own seat.

How to measure your cat

Measure nose to tail base and floor to shoulder with your cat standing, then add about five centimetres. She should stand without ducking, turn round and lie flat. The weight rating tells you what the base and the seams will take, not how much room is inside, which is why a long cat can be under the limit and still cramped. An expandable backpack buys back floor space the moment you sit down.

Backpacks, slings and bike baskets

Two straps beat one for anything longer than a few minutes, and a double backpack also spreads the load across your chest. A sling bag is quicker for a short trip to the clinic. On a bike, a basket with a safety harness clips your pet in so she cannot step out at a junction.

Carriers for nervous cats

Start weeks early rather than on the morning of the appointment. Leave the carrier open in a room she likes, put a familiar blanket in it and feed her there, so it stops meaning the vet. A soft carry bag that lives in the lounge all year does most of that work for you, and a top-opening carrier lets you lower her in rather than push her through a front door.

One carrier, several jobs

A few of these genuinely do two or three things. The Pawresa 2-in-1 carrier is a wheeled case and a backpack in one shell, and the Pendlo bike basket and carrier bag comes off the handlebars as a shoulder bag. If your dog has outgrown being carried, look at pet strollers and bike trailers.

Pet carriers and backpacks: your questions answered

Which pet carrier is approved for cabin travel?

There is no single approval mark. Each airline sets its own maximum under-seat dimensions and its own combined weight for pet and bag, often around 8 kg. What almost all of them share is a requirement for a soft-sided bag, which is why a flight-approved carrier bag clears a tight under-seat space that a rigid box will not. Check the rules on your airline's own website for the month you fly, and book your pet on early, because cabin places are capped per flight.

How do I measure my cat for a carrier?

Measure her standing: nose to the base of the tail for length, floor to the top of the shoulder for height, then add roughly five centimetres to each. She should be able to stand without ducking, turn round and lie flat. If she falls between two sizes, an expandable backpack gives you extra floor space once you stop walking, while a compact backpack carrier for cats and small dogs is easier to wear for an hour.

What does the weight limit on a pet backpack mean?

It is the load the base board and the seams are built to take, not a guide to how roomy the bag is, and that is the number most people misread. A long, lean cat can sit well under a 10 kg rating and still not be able to turn round inside. Compare the internal dimensions with your own measurements first, then check the weight limit has some headroom. For a heavier or still-growing dog, step up to a wheeled carrier you roll rather than one you wear, or move to a pet stroller.

How do I get my cat used to a carrier?

Give it two or three weeks, not one morning. Leave the carrier open in a room she already likes, put a blanket that smells of home inside, feed her meals in it and drop treats through the mesh when she wanders past, so it stops predicting the vet. A soft carry bag you can leave out as a bed all year does this quietly, and a top-opening design such as the PetPacker backpack lets you lower a reluctant cat in instead of pushing her through an end door.

Can I use a pet carrier in the car?

Yes, and for a cat it is usually the calmest option, provided the carrier itself is secured. Thread the seat belt through the strap loops on the back of the bag, or wedge it in the footwell behind a front seat so it cannot slide, and never leave it loose on the bench, because under braking an unsecured carrier becomes a projectile. Keep it on the rear seats, away from the front airbag. For a dog who travels better when he can see out, a raised seat with an internal harness clip from dog car seats and travel is the better answer, and the Pendlo carrier bag covers the car and the bike in one.
