A New Cat's First Week

A newly adopted cat needs one quiet room, not the run of the house. Put a litter tray in it, food and water at the opposite end, a place to hide and something to climb, then let the cat come to you. Cats settle better when they can get above eye level, and they will scratch whether or not you provide a surface for it. Give them both. A tall or floor-to-ceiling cat tree belongs in the room the family actually uses, not the spare bedroom, and where floor space is tight a wall-mounted scratching board does the same job on the vertical. Offer one upright and one flat surface, and put the new post beside the spot already being scratched rather than in another room. Litter and Hygiene

The rule of thumb is one tray per cat plus one, kept away from the food and out of any corridor the dog uses. Open trays suit most cats; a hood contains scatter and smell but still needs scooping just as often. Grooming, Travel and Care

Long-haired cats need combing every few days or the mats end up being cut out at the vet; short-haired cats mostly need help through the spring moult.
