Training & Safety

Training and safety are the same job seen from two angles: teaching the behaviour you want, and managing the situations your pet cannot yet be trusted with. This range covers both, from puppy pads and toilet training spray through long lines, treat pouches and clickers to muzzles, stair gates, GPS trackers and high-visibility collars for dogs and cats.

Puppy toilet training

Puppies learn from repetition, so use the same door, the same patch of ground and the same reward, roughly every hour at first and after every nap, meal and burst of play. A PupClean washable puppy pad saves you a bin bag a day and works well by the back door while the habit is forming, and in a flat or on a high floor an indoor grass toilet with a pull-out tray is the more realistic answer. Marking the right spot with toilet training spray helps a puppy make the connection sooner. Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner rather than anything containing ammonia, and never tell a puppy off after the event, because all that teaches is to go where you cannot see.

Recall and long lines

A long line is the bridge between a safe garden and genuine off-lead freedom. Clip a tracking line to a harness rather than a collar, let it trail, and practise recall at ten metres long before you try it at thirty. Pay every single recall for the first month: keep something better than kibble in a PawPocket treat bag, and a treat launcher with clicker lets you mark and reward at a distance so coming back always pays. For the ordinary walk in between, a FreeRun Pro training lead with waist bag keeps both hands free, and there is more in collars, leads and harnesses.

Muzzle training done kindly

A muzzle is a management tool, never a punishment. Fitted properly it lets a dog pant, drink and take treats, and it is the reason plenty of nervous or scavenging dogs can still have a normal walk. Size it so the basket sits clear of the nose: the Canimora dog muzzle covers most breeds and the Canimora muzzle for large dogs takes the bigger heads. Introduce it over a fortnight rather than a morning. Smear food inside, let your dog push its own nose in, take it straight off again, and only fasten the strap once the muzzle itself predicts good things. A dog that first meets a muzzle during an emergency has learnt exactly the wrong association, so do the work while nothing is wrong.

Trackers versus AirTags

They solve different problems. A GPS unit such as the Petracka GPS tracker or a GPS collar reports its own position over the mobile network, so it still works in a wood with nobody else around, but it needs charging every few days and a data plan, which is what the SIM card with a year of data is for. An AirTag lasts about a year on one battery with no subscription, but it only appears when someone else's iPhone passes it, which is fine in a town and far less useful in open countryside. Holders such as the glowing AirTag collar and the cat collar with AirTag case keep it on the collar, and the TryggTag collar with QR ID adds the low-tech backup that gets most pets home: something a stranger can simply read.

Gates, barking and visibility

Choose a Detixy retractable gate only when its dimensions and fitting requirements suit the opening. A SafeGuard cat net also needs secure installation and regular checks; neither product replaces supervision. Barking can have several causes, so identify the trigger and seek qualified reward-based training advice before selecting a device. The citronella collar and ultrasonic device use different deterrents; neither should be assumed gentler or suitable for every dog. For low-light walks, a LunaPaw LED collar or LED lead adds a light source but does not guarantee visibility or replace careful road use. Browse dog car seats and travel for the car journey.

Toilet training without the stress

Set the routine first and the products simply make it easier. A PupClean washable puppy pad by the door catches the night-time gap, and toilet training spray marks the spot you want your puppy to keep coming back to.

Building a reliable recall

Freedom is earned on a line before it is earned off one. Practise with a tracking line clipped to a harness, and keep the good stuff to hand in a PawPocket treat bag so every return is paid on the spot.

Choosing and fitting a muzzle

Measure the length and width of the snout, then pick a basket that leaves room to pant. The Canimora dog muzzle fits most breeds, while the Canimora muzzle for large dogs suits broader heads. Build up over two weeks with food, never in a hurry.

Keeping track of a wanderer

Rural roamers want live position data, so the Petracka GPS tracker is the safer choice. Town cats are usually found by a person rather than an app, which is why the TryggTag collar with QR ID is worth having whatever else you use.

Gates, nets and dark mornings

Blocking off the risk beats supervising it. A Detixy retractable gate closes off stairs and doorways without a permanent fixture, and a clip-on safety light makes a dark-coated dog visible to drivers on a winter morning.

Training and safety: your questions answered

How long does it take to toilet train a puppy?

Most puppies are reliable indoors somewhere between four and six months, with the odd accident until closer to a year. Take yours out every hour at first, and after every nap, meal and play session, then reward outside within a couple of seconds rather than once you are back in. A PupClean washable puppy pad covers the overnight gap and toilet training spray makes the right spot obvious.

Are washable puppy pads better than disposable ones?

For everyday use at home, yes: a PupClean washable puppy pad pays for itself in about three weeks, holds more and does not get dragged around the hall. Wash it hot and skip the fabric conditioner, because softener is what stops the top layer wicking. Disposables still win for travel. If getting outside quickly is not possible, an indoor grass toilet is the better long-term set-up.

Is it cruel to put a muzzle on a dog?

Not when it fits and the dog has been taught to like it. A basket muzzle such as the Canimora dog muzzle lets a dog pant, drink and take treats, and it is often the only reason a nervous or scavenging dog gets a normal walk at all. What is unfair is strapping one on cold in a stressful moment, so spend a fortnight pairing it with food first, and size up to the Canimora muzzle for large dogs if the basket touches the nose.

Should I choose a GPS tracker or an AirTag?

Pick a GPS such as the Petracka GPS tracker if your pet roams open countryside, because it reports its own position anywhere with mobile signal; budget for charging every few days and for a SIM card with a year of data. An AirTag is better value in a town, where other phones are always nearby, and it runs a year on one battery. Plenty of owners use both, plus a readable phone number on the collar.

Do anti-bark collars actually work?

Sometimes, and rarely on their own, because barking is a symptom rather than a habit. Boredom, a doorbell, a garden fence and being left alone all produce the same noise and need different answers, so work out the trigger first. If you do use a deterrent, start at the gentler end with a citronella anti-bark collar or an ultrasonic anti-bark device, use it alongside training rather than instead of it, and stop if your dog becomes more anxious rather than less.
